چکیده

Introduction/Background Over the last 2 decades, significant technical advancements have improved the delivery of prostate brachytherapy. The transrectal ultrasound-guided implant technique is the backbone of modern prostate brachytherapy. Whether it is permanent or temporary, ie, low-dose-rate (LDR) or high-dose-rate (HDR), respectively, both use similar image-guided techniques for inserting seed-bearing needles or afterloading catheters. This image-guided implant technique has improved the quality and reproducibility of prostate brachytherapy. In HDR brachytherapy, a computer-programmed remote afterloader is used to insert the radioactive source into the patient. This has several important practical advantages: (1) it is a reusable radioactive source, (2) there is no radiation exposure for hospital personnel, and (3) it offers flexible dosimetry. Our understanding of the radiobiology of hypofractionation, however, has changed the clinical application of HDR brachytherapy.

Capacitive Hyperthermia as an Alternative to Brachytherapy in Treatment of Human Prostate Cancer Cell

Introduction: The aim of this study was the evaluation of induced DNA damages of human prostate cancer cells, DU-145, treated with a combination of radiofrequency capacitive hyperthermia (HT) and teletherapy (EBRT) compared to a combination of teletherapy with high dose rate brachytherapy (BR).   Materials and Methods: DU-145 cells were cultured as spheroids ...

Salvage high dose rate brachytherapy after primary external beam irradiation in localized prostate cancer: a case report.

No standard treatment exists for locally relapsed prostate cancer after primary external beam radiotherapy with no evidence of distant metastases. Radical prostatectomy, brachytherapy, cryotherapy and high-intensity focused ultrasound are currently used as local salvage treatments. Data on the safety and effectiveness of high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy in this scenario are limited. We report...

Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer: A Systematic Review

Low-dose rate brachytherapy has become a mainstream treatment option for men diagnosed with prostate cancer because of excellent long-term treatment outcomes in low-, intermediate-, and high-risk patients. To a great extend due to patient lead advocacy for minimally invasive treatment options, high-quality prostate implants have become widely available in the US, Europe, and Japan. High-dose-ra...

Perioperative Search for Circulating Tumor Cells in Patients Undergoing Prostate Brachytherapy for Clinically Nonmetastatic Prostate Cancer

Despite the absence of local prostate cancer recurrence, some patients develop distant metastases after prostate brachytherapy. We evaluate whether prostate brachytherapy procedures have a potential risk for hematogenous spillage of prostate cancer cells. Fifty-nine patients who were undergoing high-dose-rate (HDR) or low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy participated in this prospective study. Thi...

Historical review of interstitial prostate brachytherapy

In the recent years, interstitial brachytherapy implantation has become the treatment of choice for early stage prostate cancer patients. Treatment of prostate cancer with radiation is traced back to 1909. Originally this treatment modality was very crude and could not gain much popularity till 1982. Advancements in radioactive source designs, introduction of new low energy radioactive sources,...

Assessment of absorbed dose uncertainty of prostate due to source relocating in brachytherapy by monte carlo method

Brachytherapy, is a method to treat prostate cancer in which a radiation source is placed inside or next to the cancer affected tissues. Purpose of this article is to determine the uncertainty level of received dose in prostate tissue due to the relocation of the placed radiation sources and inflation in prostate after positioning the radiation seeds. To simulate the model 6711 Amersham (activi...
